Session preparation

The more each musician understands what's expected in the studio and the better prepared they are when they arrive, the greater chance of a successful session. The following are a few recommendations for your recording project.

  ________________________

1)
Production: All musical ideas and parts should be rehearsed and ready to be recorded. Practice only the parts to be tracked prior to the session, to ensure the best possible takes.

2) Equipment: Take the time to check any gear you plan to use during the upcoming session, including:

A) New guitar strings (with spares) and extra picks.
  B) Batteries for acoustic/electric guitars.
  C) Instrument cables, power supplies and adapters.

3) Timing:
Most recording studios from the mid 1980's on have been using a click track to record, especially while overdubbing. All part's should be rehearsed using a metronome to determine, as close as possible, the tempo you would like each song recorded to. Practice with a two bar (eight beat) intro.
Also, now's the time (if you haven't already done so) to recruit fellow musicians to add any additional part's you'd like.

4) Sheet music:
Bring all lyrics and music with chords to the session, with additional copies so everyone can follow along.

5) Tracking: Prior to recording and before each part, you should tune up (preferably to the same tuner). Always avoid tuning to another instrument.
